Techniques to try when you’re driving- CPC Driver Training

Switch it off – If you can, turn off your engine when stationary for more than a minute or two. Modern cars use virtually no extra fuel when they are restarted without holding down the accelerator so you won’t waste lots of fuel turning the car back on.

Shift to a higher gear as soon as possible - Driving with reduced engine speeds reduces fuel consumption.

Drive smoothly - Anticipate the road as far ahead as possible to avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration. Decelerate early when slowing down.

Slow down - Avoid excessive speeds when possible. Driving at 85mph uses approximately 25% more fuel than 70mph.

Close your windows if travelling at 60mph or more – The aerodynamic drag on your car of an open window at speeds of 60mph or more adds to your fuel usage.  Keep your windows closed at high speeds.

Driver Essentials - Breaking

You break quicker then you speed up. If you put increased forces, you have a greater chance of unsetting your cars balance. You should squeeze the break pedal smoothly. Never suddenly stamp on it, otherwise you will get into the habbit of allowing the ABS to sort out the locked wheels.

Winter Driving

Winter conditions can be unpredictable, however most of the techniques required in cold environments are common sense:
  • Keep speed as low as practically possible
  • Increase the distance between cars, corners, junctions and any other hazards
  • Get all of your braking done on the straights, never brake during a corner
  • Be prepared for understeer and oversteer, and know how to correct when necessary
  • Be prepared to use ABS or avoidance braking techniques
  • Top up washer fluids and antifreeze
  • Select 'snow' mode if available on automatic transmissions, or if an advanced electronic stability control system is fitted.
